Valedictorian Edward Obropta, right, shares a fist thump from class Vice President Adam Miller after his speech as class Secretary Vickie Giuliano applauds. ‘Class, may the sun shine on your face and may the wind be at your back,’ Obropta told his fellow Class of 2009 graduates.

MIDDLE TOWNSHIP - There were tears in some graduates' eyes when the Class of 2009 slowly marched into the Middle Township High School gymnasium Wednesday night.

And there was art teacher Karen Biederman, who stood by the entrance, hand full of tissues.

Some students got hugs or "congratulations." The more sentimental got a tissue or two.

"I know you need this," she said to one of the girls, who started to cry when she marched into the packed gymnasium.

"I know you need one of these, too," she said to another young lady who had a tear streaming down her face.

After the class members took their seats, Biederman had only three tissues left.

The Middle Township High School class turned their tassels for the high school's 101st annual commencement. The venue was moved from the traditional outdoor location at Memorial Field in Cape May Court House due to the threat of rain.

Salutatorian Ashley Baldwin noted the class's athletic, extracurricular and community involvement successes - from the football team winning the annual Anchor Bowl to the successes of the school's marching band, mock trial team and musicals.

Baldwin noted the school's first graduating class sat in a position similar to where her class did a century later.

"We will be able to withstand anything that life throws at us," she said.

Valedictorian Edward Obropta offered thanks to all the parents, guardians, teachers, staff - and even the taxpayers.

"We are the record-setting Class of 2009," he said.

"We will forever be the Class of 2009, and we will forever stand together."

He concluded, "Class, may the sun shine on your face and may the wind be at your back."

Middle Township Committeeman Stephen Barry delivered a speech to the class offering advice, including the practical: "Take care of your teeth. … If you take care of your teeth, they'll take care of you."

Barry's 10-minute speech, which included a recitation of Matthew 25:31, had some stirring in their seats in the stuffy, crowded school gymnasium.

At one point, some in the audience applauded while Barry was still in midsentence.

He concluded with, "Congratulations, and good luck."
