WILDWOOD — A 29-year-old man was arrested Tuesday and charged with robbery and attempted sexual assault in connection with a home invasion that took place early that day.
Police said that at about 3:30 a.m. Tuesday officers were called to the 200 block of West Wildwood Avenue where a 22-year-old Romanian college student reported that she had been attacked.
According to police reports, the woman entered her apartment and was then confronted by an unidentified male who forced her into the kitchen. There, he demanded money from her while armed with a serrated knife.
Police said the victim told them the suspect “became increasingly aggressive and violent.”
She attempted to defend herself and sustained multiple lacerations and defensive wounds to her hands.
The suspect also attempted to remove the victim’s clothing and attempted to sexually assault her, police said.
Eventually, she was able to free herself and locked herself in a bedroom. The man then fled and police were called.
An investigation by police as well as the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office crime scene unit identified the suspect as Pedro Couvertier-Fernandez, 29, a dishwasher who lives in Wildwood.
He was charged with armed robbery, attempted sexual assault, aggravated assault, burglary, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a prohibited weapon for an unlawful purpose.
