Middle Township police arrested the township’s public works manager Thursday on charges of stealing a trailer belonging to the township.

Andrew Smith, 42, of Cape May Court House, was charged with official misconduct and theft and taken to the Cape May County jail in lieu of $20,000 bail, police said Friday. He was released on bail Friday afternoon.

Police received information about the possible theft of a black landscaping-style trailer, which led to the investigation and arrest, the department said in a news release.

Mayor Dan Lockwood said he would not release more details until police finished their investigation. He said Smith was a longtime township employee, but he was not sure how long.

“Middle Township, the governing body and the administration hold our employees to the highest standards, and we’re going to do what we have to do to protect the interests of the taxpayers,” he said.

Lockwood estimated the trailer is worth about $1,500.

Capt. John Edwards did not respond to requests for more information Friday afternoon.

Township Clerk Kimberly Krauss did not return calls asking how long Smith has been employed by the township.
