WILDWOOD - Somebody yelled “God bless America,” then there was a countdown from 10 followed by the blare of an air horn.
Then, 500 runners, many sporting red, white and blue socks, shirts, shorts, streamers, sparkles and American flags, went thundering north on the Boardwalk from Rio Grande Avenue.
The Fourth of July celebration was underway here with the 5K Beach ‘n Boardwalk Patriotic Run and Walk.
This was not the only thing patriotic on Five Mile Beach today to celebrate the nation’s birthday. There was also a Patriotic Pooch Parade in North Wildwood and a Patriotic Show in Wildwood Crest, not to mention music and fireworks.
The Wildwoods were not the only places in Cape May County celebrating the holiday: People were streaming into Ocean City, Sea Isle City, Avalon, Stone Harbor and Cape May to attend organized events or just to hold a cook-out by the shore.
