LOWER TOWNSHIP - The lone adult charged in connection with a Lower Township sex assault made a brief appearance in Lower Township Municipal Court Thursday morning.

Municipal Court Judge F. Thomas Hillegass told Brittany Hearon, 18, what charges she was facing and informed her of her rights. Hearon, who was arrested last Friday, is charged with endangering the welfare of a child and conspiracy to endanger an injured victim.

Hearon is not charged with the assault, but seven juveniles are charged with aggravated sexual assault, endangering the welfare of a child, endangering an injured victim, conspiracy and underage alcohol consumption.

Investigators said a juvenile was assaulted on March 15 at the Rutherford Tract, a wooded area off Glade Drive in Lower Township. The juvenile was sexually assaulted and physically abused during the incident and was treated for injuries at Cape Regional Medical Center.

Cape May County Prosecutor Robert Taylor said Thursday morning that the investigation into the March 15 sex assault was ongoing.

“We’re looking at certain items that were seized and doing a forensic analysis of cell phones and an iPod. We’re also looking at Facebook and other social media,” Taylor said.

Taylor said he would not discuss the details of the assault or the injuries the juvenile victim suffered.

“I don’t want to re-victimize (the victim) by talking about the injuries,” he said.
