A 37-year-old woman was found dead in Avalon due to an apparent heroin overdose as authorities in Cape May County continue to investigate a large influx of overdoses recently.

Cape May County Prosecutor Ken Taylor said the woman was found in a home on West 15th Avenue when police were called to the residence at 7:30 a.m. Monday.

Authorities found 12 bags containing suspected heroin residue and several hypodermic syringes in the residence.

The incident was the latest in a series of overdoses in the county — especially heroin in the past two months.

Two weeks ago there were three reported overdoses in Cape May County – including two deaths. In April, nine Ocean County residents died within eight days as the result of heroin overdoses.

Cape May County has been addressing the problem with efforts including more narcotics investigations using undercover officers, asking the public to get involved and plans for a new education prevention program aimed at grade-school students.

Anyone with information regarding Monday’s incident or any drug activity throughout Cape May County can call the Prosecutor’s Office at 609-465-1135 or contact their local police department.
