Work has begun on a project to remove three traffic lights on the Garden State Parkway in Cape May County.

Cape May County Engineer Dale Foster the work on the project started last Thursday along the east side of Interchange 11 on the highway. The contractor is stripping topsoil and clearing the trees, he said.

State and county officials held a ceremony to announce the beginning of the project last month. The $110 million, two-year project will remove the traffic lights on the highway in Middle Township and replace them with overpasses.

Bridges will be built over Shell Bay Avenue at Exit 9, Stone Harbor Boulevard at Exit 10 and Crest Haven Road at Exit 11, just outside the county complex. Ramps at each overpass will provide full access between the roads and the parkway.
