BRIDGETON - A local man was charged with animal cruelty and weapons offenses after he allegedly shot a German shepherd to death in the Bridgeton Villas apartment complex, officials said Tuesday.
The 9-year-old female German shepherd slipped out of her leash while on a walk with her owners in a nearby park on Sept. 25, and was found in the apartment complex shot at close range with birdshot, said Bev Greco, director of the Cumberland County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
SPCA investigators canvassed the complex and then asked for help from Bridgeton police to identify and arrest the suspect, Greco said.
Isiah Thomas, 24, was arrested Sunday after a warrant had been out for his arrest since Nov. 4, Greco said.
Bridgeton police said they charged Thomas with unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
The SPCA filed three felony and three misdemeanor charges against Thomas on Tuesday, Greco said. The felony charges are for killing the dog, mutilating it and abandoning it. Each carries a prison term of as much as 18 months and a fine of as much as $5,000.
Thomas is in the Cumberland County Jail on $30,000 bail, police said.
