The Democratic National Committee plans to target radio ads against U.S. Rep. Frank LoBiondo and other House Republicans who voted against the recent health care reform bill passed in the House.
Democrats are running the ads in the districts of Republican members of the House whose districts voted for President Barack Obama in 2008.
The ads criticize LoBiondo, R-2nd, for his vote, according to a script provided by the DNC.
"Congressman LoBiondo joined Republicans in Washington and voted against real reform," one ad states, according to the DNC's script. "He stood with the health insurance industry instead of us."
LoBiondo said before the Nov. 8 vote that he opposed the bill, HR 3962, specifically because it requires Americans to purchase health insurance or pay a fee to the government if they do not already have it. The bill does not allow Americans to choose not to have any health insurance, except in some cases of financial hardship. He also criticized the $1.2 trillion plan as too costly. He praised parts of the plan, however, including tenets providing for more primary care physicians.
The bill has yet to come before the Senate for review.
Among the major changes called for in the bill are:
The creation of a health insurance exchange, through which people can shop for private or public insurance;
A requirement that businesses with payrolls of more than $500,000 pay for employees' health insurance or pay the government a fee equal to 8 percent of their payrolls;
A similar but smaller fee on individuals, taken out of their paychecks like a tax, who do not have health insurance;
A $5,000 cap on out-of-pocket health care expenses for individuals and a $10,000 cap for families.
