A Fairfield Township man who claimed to have been shot at a party in March actually shot himself in the leg, police said Tuesday.
Bridgeton Police said Bruce Bartley Jr. told authorities at the Inspira Health Center emergency room that he was shot at a party on one street, then changed his story later and said the party was on another street.
After further investigation, police said they discovered that Bartley Jr. had a 22-caliber rifle with the barrel cut down to the size of a handgun, and that he accidentally shot himself in the leg when removing it from his waistband.
The weapon was eventually recovered and sent to the New Jersey State Police ballistics unit, and after the analysis came back police filed charges against Bartley Jr. for a prohibited weapon and possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose.
Bartley Jr. was arrested and released after posting $7,500 bail.
