BRIDGETON — A local woman was in critical condition after being stabbed near her home early Wednesday morning, city police said.
The victim, whom authorities identified only as a 19-year-old Academy Street resident, was in Christiana Hospital in Newark, Del., recovering from a stab wound to the neck, they said.
Charged with aggravated assault and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose is 21-year-old Kortnie Kent, of High Street in the Port Norris section of Commercial Township, police said. Kent was in the Cumberland County jail here on $35,000 bail.
Kent was taken into custody at a residence on Academy Street after officers arrived and found several people engaged in an altercation, said Capt. Michael Gaimari of the Bridgeton Police Department.
The victim was being transported to a local medical facility by friends when police stopped the car at Broad and Giles streets, he said. Members of the city’s Fire Department treated the victim before she was taken to Christiana Hospital, he said.
While the incident remained under investigation, Gaimari said, the stabbing was preceded by a motor vehicle accident on Nichols Street. The victim and witnesses identified Kent and investigators believe they recovered the weapon used in the stabbing, he said.
