A ceremony marking the start of renovations to Millville’s historic Levoy Theatre will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday.

The event will mark the start of work by Ogren Construction and its subcontractors on what is expected to be a 10-month undertaking to restore the 102-year-old theater.

Originally a vaudeville theater, the Levoy later became a movie theater until it closed in 1974.

The restoration will turn the old theater into a “state-of-the-art performing and screen arts center, and cultural heritage site,” according to the Levoy Theatre Preservation Society website.

Officials hope that the theater’s renovations will spur economic development, bringing shoppers and businesses onto the city’s commercial district of High Street.
