BRIDGETON — Police said they arrested a city man Tuesday for allegedly using a pit bull and a baseball bat to attack two men trying to repossess a car.

The incident occurred as the two men tried to repossess a 2012 Chevrolet Sonic at about 3 a.m. outside the home of 20-year-old Edgar K. Montalvo in the 400 block of Burlington Road.

The two men had the Sonic hooked to their tow truck when a woman suddenly jumped into the Sonic’s driver seat, police said. The two men asked the woman to get out of the Sonic, at which time Montalvo left his house, began shouting threats and released a pit bull, police said.

The two men got into the tow truck and began driving away from the scene, only to have Montalvo strike the tow truck with the baseball bat, police said. The “violent activity” prompted the men to unhook the Sonic, which was then driven away from the scene, police said.

Montalvo is charged with two counts each of unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and single counts of theft and aggravated assault.

Police said he was released after posting $2,500 bail.
