BRIDGETON – The first batch of prisoners from Gloucester County’s soon-to-be closed jail in Woodbury are now living at the Cumberland County jail here.
Cumberland County officials said today that 73 prisoners were transferred into the jail during the weekend.
Another 25 prisoners from Gloucester County are scheduled to be transferred into the facility later this week, they said.
The move is part of a contract agreement between both counties that would provide Cumberland County and additional $3 million in revenue annually. Cumberland County expects to realize $1.7 million from the deal this year.
The transfer occurred despite a legal attempt by the state Office of the Public Defender to stop the plan. The office, which has filed a lawsuit against Cumberland and Gloucester counties and other counties involved in the plan, alleges the deal will make it more difficult for public defenders to represent their clients.
