Atlantic City lost power late this afternoon after making it through much of the day with electricity still powering city streets, houses and casinos.

The city's first responders were meanwhile pulled in for now as sustained wind surpassed 40 miles per hour and gusted to more than 70 miles per hour ahead of Hurricane Sandy's landfall here.

A curfew is in effect until 6 a.m. to protect those who did not evacuate and also to discourage looting and burglaries, city officials said.
