A yes vote was to lower annual deficits by means of revenue hikes that spare the middle class and targeted spending cuts.

Violence Against Women: Senators voted, 85-8, to debate a bill to renew the Violence Against Women Act through fiscal 2016. A yes vote was to take up a bill (S 47) that adds protections for gay partners and spouses and gives tribal courts more power to protect Native American women.

Republican Anti-Violence Bill: Senators defeated, 34-65, a GOP substitute for S 47 (above) that differed, in part, by denying expanded jurisdiction for tribal courts, providing fewer protections for illegal immigrants, setting mandatory minimum sentences and imposing tighter fiscal controls.
