A 41-year-old Manahawkin woman died Monday when a tractor-trailer broadsided her car after she swerved to avoid another car that pulled in front of her, Stafford Township police said.

Serena Link was driving east on Route 72 at 7:30 a.m. when a light-colored Ford or Mercury sedan veered in front of her and into the Somerville at Stafford assisted living complex across from Barnacle Drive, police said.

Police said Link swerved into westbound traffic to avoid the car, but then her car was hit on the passenger side by a Shoreline Grading & Excavating tractor-trailer driven by David Percy, 51, of Jackson Township.

Officials pronounced Link dead at the scene. Percy was uninjured, and police have not found the driver who swerved in front of Link's vehicle.

"The operator might not have been aware of the accident," Stafford Lt. Thomas Dellane said. "If that person is out there, we'd like to speak to them, obviously,"

Route 72 was shut down for about three hours as crews cleared the roadway and the Berkeley Township Fire Department's Hazmat Team cleaned up about 20 gallons of diesel fuel spilled by the truck.

No charges have been filed, and the investigation is ongoing, Dellane said.

The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office, the county Sheriff's Department, Ocean County Medical Examiner, the state Department of Transportation and the State Police were among the agencies that joined Stafford police, fire and first aid crews at the scene.

Anyone with information about the accident is asked to call police at 609-597-1189.
