Lacey bicyclist seriously injured when hit by SUV

LACEY TOWNSHIP - A Forked River man was severely injured Thursday afternoon when the bicycle he was riding collided with a sport utility vehicle on Route 9, police said.

The SUV was headed south on Route 9 near Oak Street when it collided with the bicycle at 2:38 p.m., police said. The name of the 31-year-old driver from Ocean Township was not released.

The 47-year-old bicyclist, whose name was not released, suffered serious head and back injuries and was airlifted to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, police said.

The southbound lane of Route 9 was closed for about two hours while officers from the Lacey Township Police Department and the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office investigated and cleared the scene, police said.

Anyone who witnessed the accident is asked to call Traffic Safety Officer Nathan Gibson at 609-693-6636.
