Lacey students note long list of accomplishments

LACEY TOWNSHIP - Cars lined the streets near the high school Monday night as family, friends, faculty and administrators wished farewell to what was hailed as the extraordinary class of 2009.
"This class has established the benchmark for all those it leaves behind," Superintendent Richard P. Starodub said after calling it the "most accomplished class in the history of this school."
Those accomplishments included several state championships in several sports, three perfect SAT scores and one of the highest numbers of four-year honor students in the school's 28-year history.
Graduates will attend schools such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Pennsylvania, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.
"It is clear how special we really are," Student Government President Patrick J. Maguire said.
The clouds parted for the evening, allowing the ceremony to be held in the football stadium. Crowds filled the bleachers on each side of the field, while the approximately 360 graduates sat on folding chairs in front of the stage set up in the end zone.
"We need you to make this a more ethical and peaceful world," class adviser Loren A. Hueschkel said, following speakers Principal William W. Zylinksi and Board of Education President Linda A. Downing.
Salutatorian Brian C. Coleman advised his classmates to achieve that goal by working with the same dedication they have shown in the past four years.
"With persistence alone, you can accomplish anything you set your mind to," he said.
Valedictorian Melisa J. Satili followed, expressing her anxiety about approaching the end of high school before quoting Andy Warhol to inspire her peers.
"They always say time changes things," she said, "but you actually have to change them yourself."
Shortly after, air horns and car horns blared as the graduates received their diplomas, tossed their hats in the air and shared hugs.
