A Little Egg Harbor Township man who is awaiting sentencing for aggravated manslaughter has been charged with attempted murder for allegedly conspiring to kill an Ocean County prosecutor.
Executive Assistant Prosecutor Michael Paulhus said Friday that Jay Goldberg, 62, was charged Wednesday with conspiracy to commit murder and attempted murder.
Paulhus said Goldberg’s intended victim was Supervising Assistant Prosecutor Steven N. Cucci.
Earlier this year, Cucci prosecuted a homicide and narcotics case against Goldberg for the 2009 killing of next-door neighbor Sarkis Shahinian, 40.
Goldberg is waiting to be sentenced by Superior Court Judge James Blaney after a guilty jury verdict in March on charges that include aggravated manslaughter and first-degree maintaining a drug-production facility.
Goldberg remains in the Ocean County jail in Toms River on $500,000 bail on the latest attempted-murder and conspiracy charges. At the same time, he is being held without bail pending sentencing for his March conviction, Paulhus said.
