A Manahawkin man was arrested on charges of insurance fraud after allegedly falsely reporting his car stolen and then driving it to a rental car center and asking for another vehicle.

Stafford Township police charged Richard Smrkovsky with insurance fraud. On March 7 he told police his car was stolen, but then on Wednesday he drove the vehicle to a rental car center and asked for another vehicle, police said.

The business contacted the insurance company, which confirmed it was reported stolen, police said. The police were contacted and the arrest was made.

He was released pending a court date.
