LONG BEACH TOWNSHIP — St. Francis Community Center will remain closed until Jan. 2, the church has announced.
An update on the St. Francis website said the facility has heat, but additional problems have been discovered in the wake of Hurricane Sandy as assessments are completed on different sections of the center.
Some of those issues include hot water heaters in the locker room showers not working and the pool heating system not operating.
The update states that area swim teams who use the center’s pool for meets and practice will resume regularly scheduled activities in January. The Long Beach Island Grade School and Ethel Jacobsen Elementary School will also be able to continue their physical education swim classes at the center’s pool.
A new playground will be built before the spring because Sandy washed away the existing playground, the update stated.
The gymnasium roof is leaking due to metal exhaust vents creating holes in the roof during the storm, but Prep League Basketball will begin in January.
The center is using office space at locations throughout southern Ocean County.
