STAFFORD TOWNSHIP - The attorney for the township police union has notified Superior Court Judge Vincent J. Grasso of a delay in the local council introducing the 2010 budget.

In an emergency hearing Tuesday, Grasso ruled against a request by Stuart Alterman, attorney for Stafford Township Policemen's Benevolent Association Local 297, for an injunction on the dismissal of five police officers. Alterman was seeking the injunction to have the officers reinstated immediately.

Grasso said it was not appropriate for the court to intervene and determine the financial situation of the township.

During the hearing Tuesday, township attorney Kevin Starkey and township labor attorney Kevin Riordan told Grasso that the budget would be introduced this Tuesday at a public council meeting. In a letter dated April 15, Alterman wrote that he was informed that due to issues completing the budget, it would now be introduced at a council meeting May 4. Alterman wrote that he wanted to keep the court informed of the latest status of the matter.
