A Stafford Township resident has been named Ocean County historian by the Board of Chosen Freeholders.

Timothy G. Hart will assume the role held previously by Pauline S. Miller, who died in December at age 93.

Hart was Stafford Township historian in 2006, a news release states. He started working for the county in 2009 after being named division director for the Ocean County Cultural and Heritage Commission. He worked concurrently as the deputy director of the Tuckerton Seaport & Baymen’s Museum.

Hart served as president of the League of Historical Societies of New Jersey in 2010 and as a trustee from 2008 to 2010. He participates in local historical re-enactments and is a trustee for Advocates for New Jersey History.

In a news release, Freeholder Deputy Director John C. Bartlett Jr. called Hart “a true friend of Ocean County.” Hart’s love of Ocean County history makes him the perfect choice for county historian, added Bartlett, who serves as liaison to the county’s Cultural and Heritage Commission.

Bartlett said Hart is an expert in connecting Barnegat Bay to county history and explaining the impact historical events such as the Civil War had on the county.
