PLEASANTVILLE — South Jersey Gas conducted a gas safety exercise Thursday morning behind the former K-Mart building.

South Jersey Gas simulated a natural gas leak from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the shopping center located at 800 East Black Horse Pike, said spokesman Don Woods.

During this exercise, officials will simulate a leak caused by a car striking a gas meter.

“The exercise is part of an emergency preparedness program to test and enhance our natural gas leak response procedures and coordination with local emergency responders,” Woods said in a statement.

Gas will not be released, and there will be no excavation, Woods said.

Local fire, police and EMS are responding to the scene to simulate an actual response to an emergency.
