MARGATE — Olympian and boxing world champion Sugar Ray Leonard will be the keynote speaker at the Milton & Betty Katz Jewish Community Center’s third annual Jackie and Hank Herskowitz Sports Night fundraiser Thursday.

“We’re extremely honored to have Sugar Ray Leonard here with us at our annual Sports Night,” said Jeff Herskowitz, chairman of the fundraiser. “Sugar Ray Leonard is one of the legendary sports icons of the 20th century whose very name epitomizes boxing and conjures the image of a champion.”

Leonard won a gold medal in boxing at the 1976 Olympics. He was the first boxer to win world titles in five weight classes.

He went 36-3-1 in a professional career that ran from 1977-97. His last fight was at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, a TKO loss to Hector Camacho on March 1, 1997.

Next week’s event is named after the late Jackie and Hank Herskowitz, of Margate, whose philanthropy helped many people, the statement said.

Katz JCC will use the money for its scholarship fund and to provide programs and services for children and seniors in Atlantic County.
