Jamie Cohen, 22, of California, and June Mitchell, of Cora’s Readings in Ocean City, disagreed — loudly, at one point — over Mitchell’s comments on Cohen’s sexual orientation.

  • Jamie Cohen, of California, says a fortuneteller on the Ocean City Boardwalk told him his family doesn't accept him for being gay.

OCEAN CITY - A Tarot reading on the city's Boardwalk turned ugly this week after a fortuneteller told a gay client he was going to hell.

The reading led to a loud public argument, a police investigation and an anti-discrimination petition circulating among Boardwalk merchants.

Jamie Cohen, 22, of Los Angeles, is in Ocean City this week for an annual family reunion. On Sunday, he accompanied his grandmother on her annual summer visit to Cora's Readings on the 10th Street Boardwalk.

The store was busy, with a line stretching out the door. June Mitchell, the daughter of the store's owner, greeted Cohen and began a half-deck Tarot reading.

Almost immediately, the conversation got off on the wrong foot, Cohen said.

"She said, 'Your parents don't accept you for who you are,'" he said. "I said, 'No, they accept me.' She told me they were lying."

Mitchell said the cards did not bode well for his love life, either. When Mitchell informed him he was full of negative energy, Cohen said he had heard enough. He stormed out of the store without paying the $20 fee.

Cohen accidentally left his phone under his chair. When he went back to retrieve it, he said he got into a shouting match with Mitchell, who ordered him out of the store and, in front of a crowd, called him a slur used to denigrate gays.

"I just wanted to go home to Los Angeles after that. I wanted to crawl up in a ball with my boyfriend and not move," Cohen said.

His grandmother, who overheard the exchange, hugged him, he said.

Mitchell on Wednesday admitted she used the offensive word. But she said Cohen called her a Gypsy, a claim Cohen denied. Mitchell said she was upset by Cohen's reaction during the half-finished reading and the way he walked out without paying.

"I'm sorry if I offended him. That was not my intention," she said. "I wanted to make him happy. That's what I get paid for."

Mitchell, a born-again Christian, said her religious doctrine opposes homosexuality. She conceded this same doctrine does not exactly condone Tarot reading, a skill she inherited from her mother.

"It's not compatible with my religion. But I was raised with it," she said. "And I've stopped people from killing themselves and doing drugs. I'm a cheap psychiatrist."

Mitchell said Cohen would have been pleased with the full reading but the conversation quickly deteriorated.

"I read for 20 gay people a day," she said. "I don't judge. God gave us free will. I try to make my clients happy."

Cora Mitchell, the store's owner, said she has many gay friends and clients who are always welcome at the store. She said the argument merely was about two people who said things they would later regret in the heat of the moment.

Mitchell said Cohen shouted at her, "I have a right to be gay!"

"I said, 'But you're going to hell. God does not forgive people who are gay,'" Mitchell said. "All I asked him was if his family was OK with him coming out so young."

Mitchell said Cohen was welcome back to finish his reading, free of charge. But Cohen said the incident soured his vacation. He said he was returning to California on Thursday.

Cohen went to the city's Police Department on Ninth Street to file a bias complaint but decided not to. Police Lt. Steven Ang said officers later interviewed Mitchell, who likewise decided not to file a complaint for the unpaid reading.

"It's a he-said, she-said situation. Cooler heads could have prevailed," Ang said.

Cohen circulated a petition and collected 154 signatures from Boardwalk merchants disavowing discrimination against gay people. He tried to present the petition to City Hall, but officials there told him it was a private dispute, he said.

Mayor Sal Perillo on Wednesday said his only response to Cohen this week was an e-mail saying the issue was under police review.

He declined to comment without knowing more about the issue but asked how much the Tarot readings cost.

"Twenty dollars? Usually, someone is willing to tell you to go to hell for free," he quipped.

occopsridiots: newsflash... i'm not gay... i was messing with you homophobic retards. guess what, i'm also not satanic or pagan. what i find hilarious is the fact you and your kin (religious people of all flocks) love to hide behind the banner of "hate the sin, love the sinner" to disguise your misguided hatred and ignorance of something that has NOTHING TO DO WITH YOU! what 2 people do consensually to each other has absolutely nothing to do with you. trust me, you are safe. i know alot of gay people and the one common denominator amongst all of them is the fact they find ignorance ugly (actually only the ignorant find it appealing as the hateful find hate endearing). so you have nothing to worry about since you're not their type anyway. oh, and also... *kiss kiss* ;)

mangolovesjamie: My sentiments exactly! The ones at fault, you hope they will change, but no, not a chance, it's too engrained in their souls. They need to go back home, I never have seen anything like it in this country! What ever happened to the real "mom and pop" operations who have worked so very hard and still treated you with dignity along with their becoming ethnic flair.

Hey butt boy, it's in the cards! :-)

  • avatar ru-serious (2) posts 7:52 pm

FYI- the so-called "fortune teller" is a Medicare scam artist. I work in a doctors office and she had three different names and altered her birthday by one day or one year and obtained 3 different cards that we became aware of- she went by Bobbie Mitchell, Bobbie June Mitchell and Cora June Mitchell. We reported her to the state and we no longer see her as a patient. She is a total lying scumbag and is ripping off any person dumb enough to have her "read their future". Save you money and if you happen by her shop make sure you call her what she is, a gypsy!!

Nobody is asking anyone to accept or approve what others do in the privacy of their own homes. Everyone has the right to their own beliefs, but in this country, if you own a business, you do not have the legal right to turn away anyone based on sex, race, creed, religious belief or sexual orientation. If you want to own a business and dictate who can come in and who cannot, then get the heck out of this country and do us all a favor!

OK, let's get one thing straight. Jamie Cohen, the man in this article is my nephew. I was with him in Ocean City NJ when this happened. All of you gay haters need a reality check. With all the turmoil going on in this world, why so much hate about another man's private life? It's people like you that keep the world an angry, fighting planet. Jamie is loved unconditionally by his family and friends. He's a remarkable person that anyone who knows him will not deny. If you live in the USA, you have the right to speak your mind and you have to right enjoy your own civil rights. Well, Jamie does too. If you want to live in this country and enjoy the benefits, you can't be such a hypocrite and say that only certain people can have those rights. In this country we pride ourselves in acceptance of all. Shame on all of you.

Bert you are a sick disturbed individual. I do not hate queers like yourself but the sin itself. It also sickens normal people the way you mos throw it so blatant in others faces. All it is about is trying to incite some normal person to call you gay so you can cry like babies.

thank you sir. i like your cut of the jib as well, and i would like to one day catch it with my tongue as it shoots across my face...

  • avatar Lance_Uppercut (5) posts 11:20 pm

Bert666, I like the cut of your jib. I especially like the way it dangles. Anyhoo, I can't say this story surprises me. But the real victim here is me for having to read this drivel. I come to the Press of Atlantic City website every day, hoping --no, PRAYING--that my time won't be wasted on yellow (or in this case, rainbow colored (because he's gay! Get it?! HA!)) journalism. But I was so very disappointed today. So the man is gay. Big deal. Know who else is gay? Richard Simmons. Yep. Bombshell. Yeah, I know it's so hard to tell because of his pink bedazzled tank tops and his immaculately white loafers, but he's gay. Gay as galoshes. And so is this man, Jamie Cohen. And all he wanted was his fake fortune read by some presumably rough looking Ms. Cleo knock off. But instead he was insulted, embarrassed, and so very, very gay. I mean, look at that picture for the love of god. If only he would have had the foresight to throw some rhinestones onto that *ahem* wife beater...if only.

as an openly gay satanic pagan i must say, ooh boy. i one day dream of a world where gypsies and homosexuals can live in peace. and homophobic pricks all catch syphilis and watch their genitalia rot in front of their bulging eyes. it's no less than they deserve.

What a waste of ink!!!let him ball up back on the west coast.Any one gay or not that would cut their vacation short because of a tarot card reading is not all there to begin with,I feel they are for entertainment any way so why the hissy fit?Take some mydol and hop on the plane. The bright side we are less one unstable tourist.

some folks would be well-advised to pay at least as much attention to God - wrathful, vengeful, yet just and merciful - and less to his Son, who has been rebranded by post-Enlightenment moderns as J. C. Superstar, a laissez-faire Nazarene dude with some loose joints. Obiter dicta: "Only the Father knows the hour, and the season." I don't think the homosexuals' penetration (as it were) of mainstream churches will sit too well with the powers that be upstairs, however. That strategic offensive may turn out to have been a bridge too far. But no one should toss around judgements about "Hell" so lightly, it's rather presumptive! As the Dane said to Polonius, "Why, treat everyone to their 'just desserts', and who shall 'scape whipping?"

exactly, religion and fortune telling, two of the biggest shams going. the revised "golden rule": "treat others as you would like to be treated...unless you are a muslim, gay, black, poor, and different from me in any way shape or form" i'm sure jesus would be real proud! hypocrites.

it's true, you can't make this stuff up!

  • avatar mrseymour (1) posts 8:33 am

I can't believe that the mayor made light of the situation. To say, "Usually, someone is willing to tell you to go to hell for free" is making mockery of the situation and condoning the action. He is so wrong. City Hall is also incorrect in stating that it was a "private dispute". Using derogatory langauage and discrimination is not a private dispute, but is unlawful and it shouldn't be swept under a rug.

The Mitchell family are good people and have had successful businesses in this area for well over 50 years without incident. They were our neighbors in A.C.. I think this incident is well blown out of proportion.

"I just wanted to go home to Los Angeles after that. I wanted to crawl up in a ball with my boyfriend and not move," Cohen said. . . This has got to be the funniest quote I have ever seen in The Press. Go Home! Go Home!

I forgot to cap my last post. EVERY HUMAN BEING HAS THE RIGHT OF DIGNITY!

  • avatar MrWhite (149) posts 6:17 am

You have that right, vwsteve. Fortune telling is a scam that is not the Christian way.

  • avatar fshr_dn (74) posts 6:05 am

Even if Jamie was not gay, he would have experience the same crap in one way or other. Don't get me started! I live in one of the shore cities and they are are multi-cultured, multi-religious, multi-biased areas, filled with extremist ideas and disrespect to other human beings in America. If you are not of their origin, etc. you are not welcomed in their stores and they will let you know by their enjoyment of subtle slurs, unclean habits when they handle your food, bank card, etc.--so that you will NOT go back there again. (They have a nerve because the government aides them in their small business" ventures), and I guess they don't need more business. Neighborhood stores and pizza shops, etc. Not all are arrogant and rude, there are days when I come across really nice, pleasant people, when I go home after errands I am totally thankful for the easement of running errands, something I am most grateful, because of knowing what I "know" now and that there are "real"--true to their faith people, if not moral, decent, courteous, sane people I've met along the way. I am a light complected italian, there are those who think I am jewish and I certainly would not mind being jewish, esp. more so because I now know how they feel and hurt when they are faced with blatant "prejudice". I went into a corner store and the caucasian guy behind the deli counter softly and with malice sung for me a little tune when he saw me near him as I was looking at one of the shelves, he sang--"bimbo" and "they're taking over the world". It almost seems like a quiet clash of ethnicity and religion for the competition and conviction of creating the only one religion and culture, but at what cost? There is only one God, not one God "and" made-made ideology, extremist culture and religion which makes it so twisted and sick. Every human being has the right of dignity. The Bill of Rights: LIFE, LIBERTY AND THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS!

The way I see it, Cohen's family could have prevented alot of this nonsense by just telling him how annoying he is, instead of pretending they like him. This would have never happened. Cohen should sue his family for hinderance.

  • avatar Michael_Barrow (196) posts 11:24 pm

this entire story is just full of fail. the idiot who went for the reading should just shake the sand out of his female private parts and go back to LA or Mars or wherever to cry about this, and the tarot reader should figure out how to be more tactful while ripping people off, albeit at their discretion. PHAIL!

  • avatar vwsteve (99) posts 10:40 pm

A born again Christian and a Tarot Card reader.....wow, talk about a double edged sword of endless BS.
