Jail officer accused of trading sex for drugs

BRIDGETON - A Cumberland County Jail corrections officer is behind bars himself, accused of trading narcotics to inmates in exchange for money and sex, Cumberland County Prosecutor Ron Casella said Monday.

Sergey Udalovas was arrested outside the jail Saturday while on duty. The 52-year-old Millville man was charged with official misconduct and aggravated sexual assault in connection with incidents in which he supplied inmates with drugs and other contraband, Casella said.

On at least one occasion, Udalovas had sex with a visitor at the jail, Casella said. The two apparently struck an arrangement in which the female visitor would have sex with Udalovas in exchange for his promise to give drugs to her jailed friend.

Udalovas was charged with aggravated sexual assault because of his position as an authority figure and because of the perceived coercion involved in the presumed drugs-for-sex trade, Casella said.

"I find it particularly disturbing," Casella said. "When someone is the gatekeeper at a jail and is working to infiltrate drugs, we think it's an egregious activity."

In addition to the two previous charges, Udalovas was charged with possession of heroin, possession of heroin with intent to distribute and possession of marijuana.

The 13-year veteran of the county jail was arraigned Monday, when he was read the charges and instructed to hire an attorney. He is being held at the Atlantic County Jail on $175,000 full cash bail.

The next step is putting Udalovas' case before a Superior Court grand jury, Casella said.

Casella said the investigation started about a month ago. The jail's special investigation unit worked in tandem with the organized crime unit from the Prosecutor's Office.

What remains unclear is exactly how long Udalovas was involved with smuggling drugs into the jail, Casella said.

"It was our belief that he was allowing drugs and other contraband to enter the jail in return for money or sexual favors for some time," Casella said.

He declined to provide specifics about what led investigators to target Udalovas but said Udalovas was and will be the only person charged in connection with the scheme.

i live in oakland, maryland.the cops here steal some of the drugs to use themselves and plant elsewhere to catch others.our judges have been known to have alcoholic/driving problems, their kids are drug users too that get no time.the states attorneys husband has been known to beat his first wife and a nephew in his care with cases dropped.yet she puts her nose up to others that have violated others.i have the deepest respect for the few good cops here though.people that get caught with harder drugs can make a deal to get off by setting up those that have only sold a lesser drug to someone only on 3 occasions in her life.i say-everyone including those who are suppose to be the good guys, gets the same treatment and dont pretend that your better than someone else.what can be done to get these bad good guys out?people here have charges because on their "my space page" theyve got a picture of a marijuana plant and they have some friends like cheech n chong on their friends list even though theyve never met either of them.what can be done about getting these people to pay their price or getting them outta office when no one else runs against them?this world is crazy and unfair.we have no freedom here in america.its ridiculous.some may say move-give me the money.

Sounds like mutual "scumbagness". OK, the guy should be jailled, but the person who agreed to have sex with him in exchange for drugs for her friend is not much better

I feel so sad for his family. What a scumbag to do this. I know how hard the rest of the family worked to do the best for theirs.
