VINELAND — The man found dead Thursday afternoon in a wooded area has been identified as Michael Whilden, 20, detective Sgt. Matthew Browne said Friday in a statement.

Police received a call about 2:15 p.m. Thursday for a man who was sick or injured in the area of North Sixth Street and East Park Avenue, Browne said.

When officers arrived, the man was dead. Officers on scene knew Whilden and positively identified him, Browne said. Police did not release his name until his family was notified.

There were no obvious injuries to his body, police said. The Southern Regional Medical Examiner’s Office conducted an autopsy Friday, Browne said.

As of Friday, the cause of death was pending toxicology results. Calls to police Monday morning were not returned.

Officers last saw Whilden about 5 a.m. Tuesday on East Park Avenue, Browne said. Detectives are looking to speak with anyone who may have seen Whilden after that day.
