BENDER, MARJORIE COOK 99 - of Ocean City, NJ passed away Sunday, March 30 at the home of her son and daughter-in-law in Ocean City, NJ. Her son was by her side. Born in Philadelphia, PA she had lived in Germantown, PA before moving to Ocean City, NJ in 1973 where she had summered for many years. Mrs. Bender graduated from Germantown High School, received her B.S. Degree from Philadelphia Normal School and her Master's Degree in Elementary Education from Temple University, Philadelphia, PA. She was a Kindergarten Teacher in the Philadelphia School District for 35 years, retiring in 1973. Mrs. Bender was an active member of the Margate Community Church and former president of the Dorcus Guild of the church. She was a member of the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, the Order of the Eastern Star of NJ Ocean City Chapter # 83, Colony Club and Victorian Club, Civic Club, Research Club, and past president of the Women's Club, all of Ocean City. She was a longtime volunteer at Shore Memorial Hospital and was Chairperson of the Ways and Means Committee of the Auxiliary. She was predeceased by her husband, Henry S. Bender, D.D.S. in October of 1991; a brother, Elmer Cook of Villanova, PA in November, 2007; and a sister, Gertrude Cook Bodine of Ocean City, NJ in February, 2010. Surviving are a son, Henry S. Bender, Jr. and his wife, Karen of Key West, FL; three grandchildren, Karin Wanek (Carl) of Ocean City, NJ, Nicole Keenan (John) of Boca Raton, FL., Heather Clarke (Luke) of Cherry Hill, NJ; six great-grandchildren, Carl Wanek, Madison and John Keenan, Dilyn, Charlotte, and Hayden Clarke. Also surviving are three nieces, Candi Kennedy of Moorestown, NJ, Margie Widmann of Gladwyne, PA, Constance Baranzano (Ronald) of St. Davids, PA; three nephews, James Bodine (Judy) of Lake Havasu City, AZ, The Honorable Richard Abell (Lucia) of Alexandria, VA, Stephen Abell (Madelyn) of Chester Springs, PA; great- nieces and nephews, Steve Kent (Robyn) of Seaville, NJ, William Kent (Sara) of Southampton, NY, Chris Kent (Linda) of Estell Manor, NJ, Joanna Widmann (Aaron Holzapfel) of Washington, DC, Rudy Widmann of Gladwyne, PA, Julie Bodine, of Philadelphia, PA, James Bodine (Samantha) of East Grand Rapids, MI; great- great-nieces and nephews, Paige, Hannah and Camryn Bodine, Justin, Lauren, Noah, and Kai Kent; family friend and caretaker, Comfort Owusu. A Service of Memory and Love will be offered Thursday morning, April 10, 2014 at 11 o'clock from The Godfrey Funeral Home, 809 Central Avenue, Ocean City, NJ. Burial will follow in Seaside Cemetery, Palermo, NJ. The family suggests those who desire send memorial contributions to Holy Redeemer Hospice, 1801 Route 9 North, Swainton, NJ 08210.
