GERKENS, DORIS M. 92 - of Linwood, NJ., passed away on Friday, March 14, 2014. Born in Philadelphia, PA., she was formerly of Maple Shade, NJ before moving to Linwood in 1954. She was the beloved wife of Paul E. Gerkens with whom she shared 72 years of marriage. They were married on Valentines Day in 1942. She was the daughter of Mary and Thomas Peoples. Doris had a strong commitment to her faith and was a devoted member as well as volunteering her time at Grace Lutheran Church in Somers Point, NJ. She was also employed as the church secretary for many years. Doris is survived by her loving husband, Paul; her daughter, Barbara Hendrix of Marmora; her daughter Deborah Schafer and Tom Schafer, also of Egg Harbor Township and her two grandsons; Paul and Tom Schafer also of Egg Harbor Township. Doris worked as an operator for Bell Telephone in her younger years, and early in her marriage she worked as a secretary at Tulane University in New Orleans. She was a member of the Linwood Women's Club, Garden Club, the Lutheran Church Women, the church quilters, two camping clubs, she served as a Girl Scout troop leader, and sang in the church choir. Doris had a passion for reading, gardening, quilting, and sewing, the beach, camping, chocolate and travel; visiting such places as China, Lake Louise and Hawaii (her three dream places). In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in her memory to Grace Lutheran Church of Somers Point, NJ. A Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 19, 2014 at Adams-Perfect Funeral Home, 1650 New Road in Northfield from 10 until 11am with a service beginning at 11am at the funeral home. Interment will be held at Atlantic County Veterans Cemetery, Estell Manor. Arrangments entrusted to and condolences may be left for the family at

    Dear Barbara and Debby,

    I'm so sorry to hear that your mother passed away. Please accept Lisa and my condolences. I'll always remember your mother and your father when I came over your house on Shore Road. Your mother always made me feel welcome.
