Newby, Joseph I., - "Joe Doc", 77, of Pleasantville, succumbed to lung cancer on Wednesday, November 8, 2017, at home surrounded by his family. Joseph was born December 21, 1939, in Edenton, NC, to Bennie and Pernel Newby. He graduated from DF Walker High School in 1957, and on November 30, 1957, he married Annie Mae Overton. Joseph retired from Stockton State College as a custodial supervisor in 2002. He enjoyed serving the Lord and was a member of Second Baptist Church in Atlantic City, where he served as a deacon for over 30 years. In his spare time, he enjoyed horse racing, playing cards and watching TV (especially I Love Lucy and Eagles football). Joseph is survived by his wife of 59 years, Annie Mae Newby; sons, Joseph (Janida) Newby, and Edwin (Ella) Newby; daughters, Lora Bunch, Brenda J. Perry, Joanne Newby and Denise L. (Derrick) Bradley; brothers, Jessie Littlejohn of Ohio, and John Sykes of Trenton; sisters, Anne and Bertha Sykes, both of Trenton; sisters-in-law, Isadora Brown and Jessie (Jackie) Copeland; brother-in-law, Isaiah (Irene) Overton; two Godchildren, Stephanie (Kevin) Peterson of Pedricktown, and Linda (Bryant) Chambers of Mays Landing; 20 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren, 4 great great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. The family wishes to thank Holy Redeemer Hospice, Ms. Shirley Boyd and Ms. Carolyn Lilly for their loving care and support. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11AM Saturday, November 18, 2017 at Second Baptist Church, 110 Rev. Dr. I. S. Cole Plaza, Atlantic City, where friends may call from 10AM.
