Schwerin, Arthur J. III (A.J.), - "His Nibs", was born in 1944 in Berwyn, IL, into the most wonderful, loving family of father Arthur J. Schwerin Jr., mother Margaret C. Schwerin, and siblings to come brother Mark and sisters Susan and Pamela, all growing up at the family home in Kalamazoo, Michigan. His career as a U.S. Treasury Dept. bank examiner in Chicago ended when wanderlust called and A.J. sought the excitement and glitter of Las Vegas, NV, in 1969. There he began an illustrious career in the gaming industry, taking him from Las Vegas to Reno, Atlantic City, Incline Village/Lake Tahoe and eventually returning to Reno, NV. Along the way, many colorful, extraordinary men and women became fast and lasting friends to this day, all partaking in the gambling and hell-raising fun of the era. His time managing the high-limit craps pits of the Golden Nugget Atlantic City for Steve Wynn was a highlight of his career, where this unit of games became the highest-grossing table games in the world at that time. The nightly visiting Mafioso characters to the Golden Nugget's Pit 8 added an extra element of excitement. It was in Atlantic City, NJ that A.J. met the love of his life, Ruby, and married in 1983. An idyllic country life in New Jersey ended when their home burned down and they lost their beloved Irish Setter, Elsie. Afterwards, free from the ownership of any possessions, they packed the car and headed West, Incline Village their destination, to life's next new adventure. A.J.'s and Ruby's many friends and family became the cornerstones of their lives, with remarkable excursions along the way. An avid golfer (3 holes-in-one!), skier, and lover of rock 'n roll music and his beloved dogs, everyone A.J. touched was enthralled by his charm, kindness, generosity, humor and enjoyment of life. Loving soulmates of 37 years, their mantra every day upon awakening was: "I love you. And look, another day in Paradise!". A.J. departed this life on December 18, 2017. He is survived by wife, Ruby, father Arthur J. Schwerin Jr., brother Mark Schwerin, sisters Susan (Jim Finley) and Pam (Stan Leitz) and families, family-in-law Bill & Sandy Specht & family, Robert & Grace Specht & family, Susanne Taylor and son Bill (& Jen) Taylor and family, and many cherished nephews and nieces. A Celebration of Life is scheduled for February 3, 2018, location to be determined. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Nevada Humane Society or Canine Rehabilitation Center & Sanctuary (CRCS).
