Stephen Mihm / Recessions, including the last one, reduce birth rate

The Census Bureau reported last week that the financial crisis, aside from wrecking the economy, also helped drive down U.S. fertility rates to levels not seen since the late 1990s. Births for every 1,000 women ages 15 to 44 years old dropped to 62.7 in 2013 from 69.3 in 2007.
