Government must help
Atlantic City casinos
My son and daughter-in-law work for the casinos. I would like to know what the governor and City Council are going to do to help the Atlantic City casinos, which employ thousands of people.
Philadelphia is going to have table games, and Delaware has sports betting, which Atlantic City should have gotten. People talk about Atlantic City being the "Playground of the World," but that was at the beginning of the century.
If the casinos go down, so will all of southern New Jersey. Think of the domino effect this will cause. Atlantic City will go back to what it was 35 years ago - a blighted town. I'll bet no one is worried about smoking in the casinos now.

Don't take TV
so seriously, OK?
I read with some amusement the June 26 letter, "Change the channel on 'Nurse Jackie,'" from the nurse who was upset that the TV show poked fun at nurses, drug addiction and alcohol abuse.
Sometimes we just lose our sense of humor and look at these shows as if they are attacking a profession or perhaps attacking us personally. I'd like to remind everyone that this is television, the same medium that brought us shows like "All in the Family," which satirized virtually everything. It entertained so well the shows are still in reruns today.
These shows are to entertain us and provide a chance to temporarily escape from reality. Reality is rather harsh to many, and a trip to fiction land is sometimes the proper remedy.
I have a ton of respect for everyone in the medical profession, and my family has needed these health care specialists on many occasions. Like many of us, I'm indebted to these fine people.
But most of us understand that when we watch a television sitcom, we are not engaged in an indictment of a profession. I have not seen an episode of this show, but that might change now after reading that letter. It sounds worth checking out. I could use a laugh.

Rev. Leonard Carrieri
epitome of Catholicism
In a time when the media is so anti-Catholic, I feel that attention should be drawn to the life of a local priest who died June 20.
The Rev. Leonard Carrieri, a priest of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart, was the ultimate example of a Catholic priest. We live in a time when so many priests are vilified, some with good reason and some without. This priest stood out as the epitome of Catholicsm.
Carrieri was a man who inspired both Catholics and non-Catholics alike to believe. This man lived the life of one who truly loved God, and he shared this love with all he knew. His love for his faith was evident in all he had done. He was an accomplished artist in many areas: painting, sculpting and woodworking.
But in my mind, his best work was with all the people with whom he dealt. He was able to show the love of God in all of his dealings. In a time of anti-Catholicism, we should look to his fine example of Catholicism and reconsider.

Get Democrats
out of Congress
In three recent votes on the stimulus and the budget, House Republicans stood unified in opposition to wasting taxpayer money on trillion-dollar boondoggles. Yet each time these disastrous bills passed the House. And there is far more to come to satisfy House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's liberal agenda.
Even with such a unified caucus, House Republicans cannot control the agenda in Congress. Queen Pelosi and her ilk must be voted out of office, and Republicans who represent our values in government elected. A Republican majority will apply fiscal sanity to our national spending, lowering taxes and putting more money in your pocket.
But to achieve a majority, we need the people to wake up to what's happening in this country and the out-of-control, Democrat-controlled House and Senate. We have to regain our momentum and know that our voices are being heard. It is imperative we limit the number of incumbents who fall victim to the Democrats and their far-left money machines such as the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, Big Labor and Hollywood.
Pelosi and her puppets are pushing a liberal agenda that may be acceptable in San Francisco, but it is far left of Main Street America and will destroy this nation and the monetary system.
House Republicans are ready to fight to regain a majority in Congress, and I ask you to join in and stand up to Pelosi and her puppets. Speak up and be heard. Write, e-mail and call your representatives and senators. Let them know the people are coming, and they are coming for them.
