We, the people, need to regain the ideals of the Declaration

We, the people. How inspiring those word were in 1776. We, the people, were a hopeful, proud, caring, concerned people. Proud of the thought of our new nation. Concerned about its future. Caring enough to fight a war for our independence from the injustices of England. Hoping that this new nation would provide us all with the rights we so wanted: life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

What happened?

Some of us, the people, seem to have become so self-centered they no longer care about anything that doesn't involve them personally. They ask government to provide all sorts of programs, then complain because their taxes are too high. Who do they think is going to pay for what they want?

Some of us seem to take the right to vote as just another day, and don't register or bother to vote. They seem happy with things as they are, but then they complain about the way the country is being run. Who do they think is going to change that if they don't vote?

We seem to have become a divided, hyphenated nation that no longer believes in the personal freedoms the Constitution provides. We are divided by the media into red and blue states. I wonder why they chose those colors instead of blue and gray. Maybe they figured that would lead to a civil war.

We, the people, appear to take too much for granted. We are like sheep. We re-elect the same people over and over again, even though we know that some of them are accused of wrongdoing. The legislature itself only slaps wrongdoers on the wrist and allows them to continue in office.

With the Fourth of July here, maybe we, the people, should start a new revolution.

Our constitutional rights are being destroyed one by one and we do nothing about it.

The Declaration of Independence states "that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these Rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just Powers from the Consent of the Governed, that whenever any form of Government becomes destructive of these Ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it and to institute new Government."

Our new revolution would be to vote out those who have become pawns of lobbyists, big business, personal greed and lack of concern of the average person's feelings.

All politicians should be made to take the same vow as the Founding Fathers when they stated in the final sentences of the Declaration, "And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm Reliance of the Protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor."

Even worse than my tax dollars paying for programs in my OWN country to help our OWN citizenry, is WHY ARE MY TAX DOLLARS GOING TO RE-BUILD IRAQ AND HELP THEIR CITIZENRY? I know that WE bombed and destroyed their nation, I just want to know WHY didn't the "Conservatives" SPEAK-OUT against Bush's "NATION-BUILDING" with OUR TAX MONEY?

Very well stated. Another example of our demise is the practice of hiding behind anonymous and fake names when posting comments, points and counterpoints to the opinion of others. If you can't own up to your opinion, then your opinion has no value whatsoever.
