Summer is a glorious time to be in Ocean City - except during certain vexing hours on Saturdays.

That's when our major streets become gridlocked, as departing tourists struggle to leave, and arriving tourist inch their way into town. Between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., it's frustrating and irritating to be anywhere near 34th Street or Ninth Street.

I have a modest proposal to make those dreaded hours on Saturday a more visitor-friendly time: Rent police officers, paid by contributions from area businesses, to direct traffic.

Other cities sell naming rights to various public venues. Why not solicit businesses to contribute for extra police to direct traffic during the peak periods of travel? Large signs could be put up at each intersection saying, "Traffic control courtesy of Wonderland (or Mack and Manco's, Johnson's Popcorn, Shriver's, the Flanders Hotel, and so on).

You'd put an end to the weekly difficulty of getting out of and into America's Greatest Family Resort.
