The Egg Harbor Township bike path is a 7.5-mile strip of blacktop created for exercise and safe pedestrian travel.

Recently, I witnessed a man with a small white dog using the path as an area to defecate on. He and the dog then drove away in a pickup truck. Over the past couple of years, I've witnessed many people's pets using the path for the same purpose.

During the past month, the amount of dog feces along the path has increased. Owners allow dogs to release on the blacktop, and they leave it there, where we walk, run and bike. The amount of feces between Fernwood Avenue and the start of the bike path is the worst I've seen this summer.

There are many wooded areas that pet owners can utilize - or how about their own yards? Residents and visitors shouldn't have to worry about bringing dog feces and disease into their homes where family members lay and babies play.

This is also a problem throughout many housing developments - pet owners walking their dogs and allowing them to defecate on residential lawns.

Residents need to speak up and contact their council representatives and the mayor's office. Ordinances must be enforced ordinances and violators must be fined.

I hope this letter is read by the Egg Harbor Township mayor and council members.
