In the fall, the state Legislature will begin preliminary conversations about next year's budget. Too often we look ahead to the next battle without taking time to acknowledge the one we just finished.
That is why The Arc of New Jersey would like to thank Gov. Chris Christie and the Legislature on behalf of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities across the state, for the services funded in the fiscal year 2014 budget.
This budget provides unprecedented funding for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and promotes community-based care. Monies will be used to serve individuals on the waiting list, people facing dire emergencies and students aging out of their educational entitlements. Also included is Olmstead funding to continue the depopulation of New Jersey's developmental centers. The budget maintains early intervention funding and also includes a small, one-time pay increase for community providers, the staff who care for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities every day.
This budget is the result of hard work and negotiation. We thank the governor and all the members of the Senate and the Assembly for this funding, which will go a long way toward supporting individuals in local communities.
