NBA's Jason Collins

shatters stereotypes

Regarding the April 30 story, "NBA veteran Jason Collins comes out as gay":

Wow, the first active professional team-sports figure - who stands 7 feet tall and weighs 270 pounds - goes public about his sexual orientation, and in an instant, it breaks the homosexual stereotype.

Collins is one of the toughest, most physical players in the league. I commend him on his courage. We need to accept people for who they are, not what other people feel they should be.

Sexual preference

makes headlines?

Regarding the April 30 story, "NBA veteran Jason Collins comes out as gay":

So a person made an announcement that generated headlines in the media and even prompted a congratulatory phone call from President Barack Obama.

Was the announcement about finding a cure for a dreadful disease? Was it about an invention that would end world hunger? Was it about a new sports record or achieving a new high in academia?

Unfortunately, no. It wasn't any of these. The momentous announcement that gathered all this attention was about his sexual preference.

Can the media and the presidency get any more immature and graceless?
