An Egg Harbor Township woman was found dead on the side of the road in Hamilton Township on Friday morning in what has been ruled a homicide.
The Prosecutor's Office has identified the woman as 25-year-old Joyce Y. Vanderhoff. An autopsy ruled the death a homicide but no further information is being released on the cause of death at this time.
A passing motorist called police around 9 a.m., after spotting the body along Weymouth Road, acting Atlantic County Prosecutor Jim McClain said.
Atlantic Blueberry Co. General Manager Denny Doyle was in his office across the road when he said he saw police cars. He thought at first it was a car stop or maybe an accident from the wet roads.
But when it took longer than usual, he found out the body had been found.
“The police did the right thing and shut the road down,” he said.
The road is used to go between the White Horse Pike and the Black Horse Pike, he said, but it’s never too busy.
“My heart sure goes out to the family,” he said. “I hope they catch the person who did something like this, if (foul play) is the case.”
This is the second woman’s body to be found in Atlantic County this year. Last month, a woman’s remains were found in a suitcase partially buried in an Egg Harbor Township field. No arrests have been made in that crime.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office Major Crimes Unit at 609-909-7666 or Hamilton Township police at 609-625-2700.
