Galloway has a new member on its council.
Democrat Jim McElwee defeated Republican incumbent John Mooney III on Tuesday’s election. McElwee, 61, a South Jersey Transportation Authority supervisor, will serve a one-year term and his seat will be up for election again next November. He will fill the remaining year of the term for former Councilman Dennis Kleiner who resigned in June after he moved out of the township.
The unofficial vote was 6,964 to 6,265, McElwee said.
McElwee will join Jim Gorman as the second Democrat on the seven-member council.
The vice president of the township’s Democrat Club said the support for President Barack Obama and getting his name out there from his unsuccessful run last year helped his campaign.
McElwee said he is excited to be able to serve on the council and will work to address the upcoming fiscal issues. The township faces layoffs to close a projected deficit of more than $1 million next year.
“I want everyone to know I will work with everyone on council,”: he said. “With the fiscal situation I will try to make sure as many people as possible can keep their jobs.”
Mooney, 57, was appointed in June to fill Kleiner’s seat. He said the voter turnout for Obama was a key in the Democrat’s victory. Mooney said he wished McElwee well on his victory.
