Barnegat Bay's survival and the pending closing of the Oyster Creek Generating Station, scheduled for 2019, have been two of the main topics in this year’s 9th Legislative District races.
Other main topics include the millionaire’s tax, property taxes, and job growth.
Today, voters will decide among incumbent Republicans — Sen. Chris Connors, Assemblywoman DiAnne Gove and Assemblyman Brian Rumpf — and Democratic challengers — Dorothy Ryan for Senate and Assembly candidates Carla Kearney and Bradley Billhimer.
Connors has served 21 years in the Legislature, while his opponent, Ryan, is a former Barnegat Township committeewoman.
The Republicans are heavily favored. According to a Stockton College/Zogby poll released last week, Connors’ lead over Ryan is about 19 points, with the Assembly candidates also building a double-digit lead.
Following a legislative reapportionment earlier this year, the district now features Galloway Township and Port Republic in Atlantic County, as well as Tabernacle, South Toms River, and Seaside Park in Ocean County.
The district lost Folsom, Manchester, Lakehurst, and Hammonton in that redistricting.
