There are a few locals to watch today in one of college football's biggest rivalry days. Here are a few to watch:

Rutgers at Connecticut, noon (ESPNU)

The Scarlet Knights badly need this game to become bowl eligible. Here's a link to the wire preview story. Safety Tejay Johnson (Egg Harbor Township) has 33 tackles, incuding three pass breakups and three pass deflections. Also look for fullback Kevin Marquez (Egg Harbor Township) on special teams. Temple at Memphis, noon (ESPNews)

This is Temple's final game of the season and the last game of offensive lineman Kyle Whittingham's career. The Atlantic City High School graduate has started every game this season. Game notes

Lafayette at New Hampshire, Noon (

Barnegat graduate Mike DeTroia has seven catches for 50 yards as a wide receiver for the Wildcats this season. Defensive end Robbie Zauck (Ocean City) torn his ACL in camp at the end of the summer and hasn't played this season. According to his father, he's ahead of schedule to return next season. Game notes

Sacred Heart at Fordham, 1 p.m. (

The Division I Football Championship Series playoffs start today and there are a ton of locals playing for Sacred Heart, beginning with St. Joseph grad Gordon Hill (79 tackles, two interceptions, four forced fumbles and 101/2 tackles for a loss), and Egg Harbor Township grad Stephan Thomas (51 tackles, two interceptions and a forced fumble) in the secondary. The Profs advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament with a dominating performance against Endicott last weekend. Here's our story previewing today's game against the No. 2 ranked team in the country. There are several locals on the team, including defensive lineman Josh Popper (Egg Harbor Township, 61 tackles, 21/2 sacks and an interception for a touchdown), defensive back Jared Sanchez (Hammonton, 32 tackles and an interception) and defensive lineman Darryl Pratt (Egg Harbor Township, 27 tackles, including 31/2 for a loss). Virginia Tech at Virginia, 3:30 p.m. (ESPNU)

Defensive end Max Valles (St. Joseph) will get a taste of a big rivalry game that occurs every Thanksgiving weekend. The freshman has played in nine games and started three. He has 17 tackles, 21/2 sacks, three pass breakups, a quarterback hurry and a fumble recovery. Game notes

Penn State at Wisconsin, 3:30 p.m. (ESPN)

The Nittany Lions' defense has a distinctive local flair lately as three players have seen extensive playing time lately. Senior linebacker Glenn Carson (Southern Regional) leads the team in tackles with 85. Fellow linebacker Brandon Bell (a freshman from Oakcrest) has 18 tackles. Redshirt freshman Austin Johnson (St. Augustine Prep) has 23 tackles. Game notes

Clemson at South Carolina, 7 p.m. (ESPN2)

The Gamecocks are led by linebacker Kaiwan Lewis (St. Joseph) with 39 tackles, including three for a loss. Game notes
