GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP – The two sponsor exemptions for the $1.5 million ShopRite LPGA Classic had two very different endings.
Meghan Stasi, a 34-year-old Voorhees native, didn't make the cut after finishing two rounds at 9-over-par. Marina Alex, 21, lasted to play another day.
Alex had a tough first day finishing 6-over, but the 21-year-old came back in the second round with a 5-under par to finish her two rounds of play at 1-over.
The top 70 golfers, including ties make the final cut, which will be around 3-over for the two days.
“Great day @ShopRiteLPGA! Course was set up great. Really excited to play the final round tomorrow!” Alex wrote on her Twitter account.
Alex had six birdies and one bogey in her second round. The first round was so different: six bogeys, a double bogey and two birdies. Alex was part of the groups battling dark skies and a tough wind on Friday.
Stasi, a top amateur player, knows the course well. She would come here when she was younger to see some of the best golfers in the world at other Classic events. She has many family members who live locally and most of them came to root her on this weekend.
Stasi said she probably had about 30 members of her family at the course.
“They were loud yesterday,” said Stasi, who teed off at 7:25 a.m. this morning. “I think they were waking up today.”
Stasi enjoyed playing the tournament and said she had a great experience. She played her rounds with Jennifer Johnson, who shot 8-under on Saturday and got to enjoy that first-hand.
“If you took took away my four 3-putts, I would have been right in there,” Stasi said. “But other than that I was happy with the way I hit the ball. I'm not happy, happy. But I'm happy if that makes sense.”
