Youth softball/baseball roundup: Madison Morano pitches no-hitter as Hammonton beats Brigantine for District 16 title

Madison Morano pitched a no-hitter as Hammonton beat Brigantine 12-0 to win the District 16 Little League (ages 11-12) softball championship in Northfield on Thursday.

Morano struck out 14. She also had two hits with one RBI and one run scored.

Sabrina Carlamere was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored for Hammonton, and Elizabeth Shendock was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Melanie McLaughlin was 2-for-2 with two RBIs. Chelsea Aquino added two hits, too. Nyasia Flores scored a run, and Alyssa Worrell had an RBI.

Brigantine's Maddie Taggart struck out seven.

District 16

9-10 baseball

Northfield 2, Margate 1: Winning pitcher Cornelius Masterson went 4 innings, giving up two hits and striking out seven. Reliever Sean Dillon finished up without allowing a hit. Conner Foley singled in the winning run in the second inning.

For Margate, pitcher Billy Kral went five-and-one-third innings and struck out five.

Northfield plays host Somers Point at 4 p.m. Saturday.

District 3

Salem beat West Cumberland 7-5 to win the District 3 Little League (ages 11-12) softball title.

Junior League (12-14) softball: West Cumberland 2, Penns Grove 1; Pennsville 12, Salem 0.

9-10 softball: West Cumberland 17, Pennsville 1 (game ended in the fourth inning); North Cumberland 36, Penns Grove 8 (game ended in the fourth inning).

Junior League (12-14) baseball: Salem 5, North Cumberland 4 (eight innings); East Vineland 15, West Cumberland 7.

Senior League (14-16): Salem 11, Penns Grove 0 (game ended in the fifth inning).

Babe Ruth tourneys

Area Babe Ruth all-stars ages 13-15 will compete for the District 8 title beginning Saturday. The Atlantic Shore teams, which consist of players ages 14-15 from Margate, Ventnor, Somers Point, Linwood, Northfield, Mullica, Absecon and Brigantine, will face off against Millville's teams in a best-of-three series. Atlantic Shore, Mays Landing, Egg Harbor Township and Millville will all compete in a double-elimination tournament for the 13-year-olds' bracket title.

The winners of the District 8 tournaments will advance to the state tournaments, which begin July 24.
