Local college notebook: Eight locals star for Marietta crew at Braxton Regatta

Mike Flanagan (Holy Spirit), Matt Newsome (Ocean City) and John Chester (Ocean City) were all members of Marietta College's lightweight eight that won the Bill Braxton Memorial Regatta in Philadelphia on Sunday in 4 minutes, 11.71 seconds.

The Pioneers' varsity eight took third place in its race and featured James Smith (Holy Spirit) and Richie Fredericks (Ocean City). Marietta's freshman/novice eight also finished third and featured Andrew Parenti (St. Augustine Prep), Nico Richey (St. Augustine Prep) and Chad Rummler (Ocean City).

Crew: Temple's Paige O'Sullivan (Mainland Regional) and Joanna Sutor (Mainland Regional) won in the freshman novice four at the Braxton Regatta. O'Sullivan was in the second -lace varsity eight boat while Sutor was in the second-place junior varsity-eight boat. On Saturday, O'Sullivan also placed second in the varsity eight at the Frostbite Regatta while Sutor helped the junior varsity eight place second in the heat. Sutor also raced in the freshman eight category and placed first overall. ... Caitlin Smith (Egg Harbor Township) stroked George Mason University's varsity eight to a gold medal at the Frostbite Regatta. The University of Delaware's Justin Weiner (Oakcrest) rowed bow in the varsity lightweight eight, finishing seventh in the Princeton Chase and second in the Head of the Schuykill in the heavyweight division. ... The Old Dominion freshman eight, with stroke Kiersten Stephens (Ocean City), six seat Shelby Favre (Holy Spirit), bow Kelly McHale (Holy Spirit), and coxswain Allison Giegerich (Holy Spirit) placed second to University of Virginia's A boat and was 33 seconds ahead of third-place Penn at the Rivanna Romp in Charlottesville, Va.

Field hockey: Jenna Lombardo (Southern Regional) and Lauren Conner (Egg Harbor Township) were two of four Rowan University field hockey players who earned Longstreth/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division II South Atlantic honors. Lombardo was named to the first team while Conner earned second-team honors. Lombardo, Conner and goalie Lisa Apt (Oakcrest) also earned New Jersey Athletic Conference first team honors. ... Justine DiPaolo (Lacey Township) scored a goal in Montclair State's 3-0 victory over Hartwick in the East College Athletic Conference Mid-Atlantic Championship on Sunday. DiPaolo also earned an NJAC honorable mention.

Cross Country: University of Maryland's Kevin Gahr (Mainland Regional) finished 64th out of 196 runners in the NCAA Division I regional Championship. Gahr's time of 33 minutes, 58 seconds was third for the Terps, who finished 10th in the 32-team field. Boston College's Michael Keebler (Holy Spirit) also competed and finished the 10K race in 34:54, good for fourth place for Boston College. ... Rowan University's Jena Peacock (Our Lady of Mercy Academy) took second place at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Atlantic Regional on Saturday to qualify for the national championships next weekend.

Women's basketball: Long Island University senior Connie James (Absegami) was recognized as this season's first Choice Hotels Northeast Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week. James turned in a career-high 20 points in the Blackbirds' season-opening 77-73 overtime loss to La Salle on Sunday.

Tennis: TCNJ's Karisse Bendijo (Egg Harbor Township) earned All-NJAC first-team honors with doubles partner Allison Tierney. The duo went 4-0 in conference play and 10-4 overall.

Swimming and Diving: Traci Hofer (Millville) helped The College of New Jersey to a 127-74 victory over Franklin and Marshall by winning the 50-yard freestyle in 24.82 seconds on Friday.

Men's soccer: Loyola University's Kevin Curran (Ocean City) recorded his first points with two assists against Manhattan on Sunday.

Wrestling: The College of New Jersey freshman Brian Broderick (Southern Regional) collected his first college tournament win, claiming the Ursinus College Fall Brawl title at 174 pounds. Broderick scored an 18-1 win by technical fall in the final, beating Will Harcum from the Apprentice School. Ed Broderick (Southern Regional) finished second at heavyweight.

Ice hockey: Zach Stern (St. Augustine Prep) scored the first two goals for Robert Morris in a 7-5 loss to Arizona State University on Sunday at the ACHA Midwest Showcase in Chicago.
