The 51st Atlantic City Marathon, postponed indefinitely last month, has been rescheduled for Sunday, Nov. 15.
Longtime race director Barbara Altman confirmed Thursday night that a successor has been found to take over her duties as coordinator and that the event, the third oldest continually run marathon in the country, would be held next month.
A formal announcement on the rescheduling will be held today at 1:15 p.m. at the Katz Jewish Community Center in Margate.
Altman said that ever since a story about the marathon's postponement appeared in The Press on Sept. 25, she has been flooded with calls from individuals and groups offering to help make sure it was held this year.
The marathon, originally scheduled for Oct. 18, was postponed indefinitely last month because Altman had been unable to find someone to replace her as its director.
"Its very, very exciting that it's going to continue," said Altman, 67, who coordinated the race with the Boardwalk Runners Club for the last 20 years. "Everything is moving forward and it's fantastic."
When Altman announced in September that the race had been postponed, she said it was unlikely a solution would be found in time to reschedule the event in 2009.
The Atlantic City Marathon is accompanied by 5K, 10K and half-marathon races.
Jason Schwartz, the JCC sports and recreation director, declined to comment.
