Barons fall to D.C. United 2-0 in U.S. Open Cup game

Joe Banks, left, battling Real Maryland’s Yendry Diaz for the ball June 16, has been with the Barons six seasons. Banks said tonight’s game is one of the biggest games he’ll ever play in.

  • Byron Carmichael, in his sixth season with the Barons, has scored eight goals in the U.S. Open Cup.
  • Leon Brown, in his fourth season with  the Barons, is a coach with the team’s youth academy.

GERMANTOWN, Md. -- The Ocean City Barons' run in the U.S. Open Cup is over.

The amateur Premier Developmental League team lost to D.C. United of Major League Soccer 2-0 in the third-round game on Tuesday night.

The game was a lot closer than the score indicated as it was scoreless at halftime and United's first goal came on a penalty kick midway through the second half.

United's second goal came in extra time after Barons goalie Tunde Ogunbiyi bobbled a free kick.

    The Barons did very well in spite of losing to a MLS team I appluad their efforts and kept the game scoreless for a long period of time. Keep your chin up Barons !! You guys made OC Proud !

    Coach Holloway red carded for 2nd time this week. Team should of kept Coach P. Great effort by Barons though.
