An estimated 1,000-pound blue marlin was caught and released Tuesday on the Lori A out of Sen. Frank S. Farley Marina in Atlantic City, according to a report from Curt Riccardi at Offshore Enterprises.
Mark Heron, captain of the boat, reported owner Lori Muscara of Pipersville, Pa. initially jumped in the chair but did not take the rod after she saw the fish leap out of the water and nearly spool the reel.
Chris Jazman of Somers Point took the stick, never stopped reeling and got the fish to the boat in an hour. When the blue jumped at the stern of the boat, Heron said he thought a small plane had crashed in the water. Heron said the width of the Lori A is 16 feet and the blue was longer than the transom is wide. Heron said it was the most beautiful fish he ever saw and would not kill it.
They fished 1,000 fathoms in Carteret Canyon, where they had 83-82 degree water and lot of debris collecting mahi. Muscara caught a blue marlin about half the size of the big one, and they also had two 80-pound yellowfin tuna and were "covered up" with white marlin on that trip.
Ocean conditions have been a little rocky lately because of the winds, but that was not the only news from offshore as big-game fishing fans took advantage of their opportunities. John Raumundo on Sea Mistress got a 77-pound yellowfin tuna trolling the Elephant Trunk. Jim Moran at Moran's Dockside in Avalon said he also had reports of tuna at the Tea Cup
